Beginner Paint Sets
Blickrylic 6 Pack Student Paint
This is the exact same paint we use for our painting parties.
Blickrylic is a true acrylic paint, priced for the budget-minded. Because it’s so affordable, you can experiment more, or try your hand at something big! The student acrylic is thinner than the studio acrylic, more fluid than anything, which makes it perfect for the beginner.
The 6-pack includes flip-top pints, with the colors Ultramarine Blue, Chrome Yellow, Fire Red, Phthalo Green, Mars Black, and Titanium White.
Last I checked it was $29.56 on Blick.
The only other color we use quite frequently that is not included in the 6 Pack is Phthalo Blue. You can buy it separately.
I think the Pint sized Phthalo Blue was listed at $5.37 on Blick.
Blick Studio Acrylics
The next step up would be the studio Acrylics. I use these in my own work. They are a soft body paint, not liquid like the student acrylics. You can use them on just about any surface, including canvas, and wood. This is the paint I use when I paint on wood pallets.
This set contains 120 ml (4 oz) tubes of 6 colors, including Titanium White, Mars Black, Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Ultramarine Blue, and Phthalo Green.
This starter set runs for about $16 on Blick, which is a great deal, especially for the bigger 4 oz tubes.
Now, you can also get a set of 12 colors, smaller 21 ml bottles, but you get more colors to experiment with.
Blick is doing this special, it’s a set of 12 + 1. Basically you get the original set of 12 (21 ML) tubes, which contains Titanium White, Ivory Black, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Orange Hue, Primary Yellow, Dioxazine Purple, Green Light Permanent, Primary Blue, Phthalo Green, and Primary Red, plus an extra, Bright Auqa Green.
So the 12 color set plus 1 of Blick Studio Acrylic is about $14 on Blick. Honestly, you don’t need a ton of different colors. You can get buy using mostly basic colors, however, if you’re into more realistic landscapes and such, their are some natural colors in this set that I think are important. Including the Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber. Alizarin Crimson is also a good one to have as well.
Professional Paints
Golden Fluid Acrylics
When I first started painting, I used the soft body Blick Studio paint. It worked great! But as time went on, and I switched to canvas more and more, I wanted a more professional, smoother look to my paintings. I now use the Golden Fluid Acrylics. Their flow and pigment is unlike any other. Having said that, they are expensive. I bought myself this exact set, and although the bottles are small, you’ll find that you don’t need much paint to get what you need.
Now, if you are just starting out, you absolutely do not need this paint. This is for later on down the road when you decide you want to step it up. Last I checked this 10 pack of Golden Fluid Acrylic was about $40 on Blick.
